Day 2 - Boston to Milford
As noted in yesterday's blog, I woke up at 4am this morning. K wasn't too far behind at 5. As a result we ended up leaving the hotel at 7am to start the day.
Our plan for breakfast was 50mins away a state over in Rhode Island so it didnt seem to ridiculous. We assumed cos of the hour, and it being Sunday, the roads would be quiet - we were wrong. The road through Boston and down to Rhode Island was pretty rammed but K handled it like a champion.
Soon we were leaving Massachusetts behind and arriving in Rhode Island and our first stop of the day - the Modern Diner just outside of Providence. It was also quite busy even though it was 8am but we got a wee booth. K ordered the classic eggs, bacon, homefries and toast and i got cheese grits topped with jalapeno bacon (it came over 2 plates with eggs, home fries and toast!). The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great and the building was beautiful- 10/10 would visit again.
After breakfast we drove down into Providence proper, it was a lovely town. Our first stop was a wee park with views over the downtown and the State Capitol, we didnt have time to explore fully so it was a nice wee overview. We then drove a few blocks down to Brown University for a wee poke about.
Soon it was time to leave Providence and Rhode Island behind and on we went to Connecticut. We reached our 3rd state of the day at about 1030am, very impressive!
Our first stop in CT was Clyde's Cider Mill just outside Mystic. It was brilliant - we watched apple juice being made in an old fashioned way and bought apple cider donuts and apple juice made freshly on the premises. It was all great but there were A LOT of wasps about.
We drove down into Mystic and had a wee wander about. We watched Mystic Pizza last week to prepare so it was cool to see the pizza shop and the drawbridge as well as the Mystic River itself. Some of the houses around there were ridiculously massive, exactly the type you expect to see in New England.
We hit the road again and powered on to New Haven, home of Yale. We arranged to do the 130pm tour but had a wee bit of time beforehand for a wander about. It was absolutely roasting by this point so i got a wee iced latte to help me cool down.
Weirdly our tour was lead by 1 of the 3 Scottish people that go to Yale! An Ayrshire boy no less. He was really great and the tour was brilliant. It was good to get an insight from a current student and we pretended we were on Gilmore Girls when Rory did the same tour. Our favourite building was the Beinecke Library, I recommend googling that bad boy.
Post-tour we headed a wee bit out of town to visit the Pez factory and visitor centre. It was exactly the kind of kitch americana we love on our road trips.
We headed back into New Haven after the tour for an early dinner at Frank Pepe's for apizza the New Haven take on pizza. We did extensive research before leaving home to decide which of the competition to try and we weren't disappointed. The others might be better for all we know but we can confirm that Frank Pepe's is delicious. It is cooked in a coal fired oven and it gives it it's crispy edges and chewy crust. We had read horror stories about how long we'd have to wait but we were only about 20 mins. Once inside we got a sweet wee booth and set about deciding on our toppings - we shared a caesar salad and I had the small pizza with pepperoni, K had a white pizza with roast red peppers and broccoli. We both gave up at the half way point and got our leftovers boxed up. By the time we were leaving the queue was massive so i think we timed it perfectly!
After dinner we headed a few towns West to Milford to check into our hotel. The reason that we chose this hotel is because we were going to do a day-trip to Manhattan tomorrow and it is near the train station but we've decided to can it. The hotel is nice though and our room is massive so we're happy enough.
We're currently sitting in bed knackered due to our early start even though it is only 745. K is watching the Twilight Zone on Netflix and eating leftover pizza while i type this so she's quite delighted.
I'm going to make her put something better on and join in with the pizza eating now that ive finished this.
I thought of mystic pizza when I started reading this. I've not seen that since I was a child, but I never realised there is actually a place called mystic. What a cool place name. Small world with the Ayrshire boy. Would have been totally bizarre if you'd known him. Mmmm pizza. The wasps are really bad here too at the moment - I thought it was usually earlier in the year they came!
ReplyDeleteOff to a great start. Sounds wonderful. Did your guide say where in Ayrshire? Keep going pezheads.
