Day 12 - Salem to Boston
I forgot to mention yesterday that our hotel was on the "concierge level", this means we had access to a special concierge room on our floor with free food and drink. We didn't get to take advantage of it yesterday cos we were out but it meant we got a free breakfast away from the hoi polloi this morning. I had a bagel with cream cheese and some melon and blueberries and K had a mix of cereals.
We were only a few miles from Boston but we went a detour to the deCordova Sculpture Park. It was brilliant and we saw some adorable chipmunks! The park is set over 30 acres and you just wander about being delighted. All the houses around near the park were MASSIVE. There was also a Walter Gropious and a Marcel Breuer house nearby so we went to see them too, a highly cultured morning.
We spent our afternoon in Cambridge, our first stop was Asmara for Eritrean food. We got the veggie platter for 2 and it was delicious, sadly we couldn't finish it all. After lunch we got the tube up 1 stop to Harvard. It was cool to see and the Library did look amazing but we didnt spend as much time there as we did at Yale. We probably spent more time in the Harvard Book Shop than on campus.
We headed to our air bnb after our trip to Harvard. It is weird cos this is the last place that we will be staying before head home. Thankfully, the air bnb is lovely so we're having a lovely send off. It is a bit north of the city but the tube in is only about 10 mins so it is pretty convenient.
We were going to go to a famous pizza place for dinner but when we left the flat we discovered it was pouring so we didnt want to schlep too much. We had a wee look about the city in the rain, got soaked by a car hitting a puddle and ended up sitting at the bar at the Cheers bar. To be fair we are in Boston.
It was actually pretty cool, im calling the guy next to K Norm cos he was actually regular and they did all know his name. We had a bit of bantz with the bar man and it turned out the girl next to me was English and is going to see Carrie Underwood tomor. We had a bit of chat about America and country music, she is also a regular c2c goer.
The food was surprisingly good, I had a steak and cheese sub and K had a burger. The steak was proper big chunks and I washed it down with a Sam Adams in the city it is brewed.
We just hopped on the tube back to the air bnb and now we're lying in bed watching Glow on Netflix. Sadly it is meant to be raining til we leave so we probably wont get the best of Boston.
That's amazing about the cheers bar. I'd have imagined it'd be rammed with tourists, but it sounds like it is on TV. You just need kirsty ally and you'd be laughing. Hope the rain clears up.
