Day 8 - North Conway

Another wonderful day today, plus we're staying at the same place tonight so it was nice not to have to pack everything up this morning.

We were out quite early cos we had a reservation on the cog railway at 930. We stopped off at the Vintage Baking Co and I got a bacon and cheese croissant and a maple latte and K just got a coffee since she had a cookie with her.

The ride to the railway took us through the Crawford Notch and it was beautiful. Today was one of those perfect autumnal days where the sky was blue, there were no clouds, when the sun hit you it was warm but there was a wee nip in the air. It gave a perfect backdrop to the foliage and its many colours.

We arrived at the railway in plenty of time and took our pre-allocated seats. Even though it was billed as 3 carriages it was actually 3 different 1-carriage trains, each with their own engines. It took about 45 mins to get to the top of Mount Washington (the highest peak in New England) and at the top it was freezing. Freezing.

It looked like snow but it was actually just the same sort of ice you get on the outside of plane windows apparently. Luckily we'd had the foresight to buy hats and gloves yesterday or we'd have frozen. We really couldnt have had better weather for the top, the views were spectacular, we could see for miles.

After an hour at the top, we were back on the train heading down. It was so steep that K's wee legs didn't reach the floor. On the way back to North Conway we stopped to see a few waterfalls and generally enjoyed the views. The roads were crazy busy, people just parking in the hard shoulder everywhere.

We went for a late lunch at Moat Mountain Smokehouse and Brewery and it was mobbed. We shared brisket nachos and a pulled pork brioche with chips, I had one of their own brew beers "Ms V's Blueberry". The food was delicious but massive, we boxed up about half the nachos to take home.

Post-lunch we checked out some of the shops in town, most notably Books-a-million, White Birch Books and Zeb's General Store. Then being the crazy party animals that we are we decided to hit up the laundromat. I do enjoy the laundromat vibe.

We didn't really want any dinner so we just had the leftover nachos, some popcorn and some of the pic n mix we got yesterday on the sofa while watching Now and Then.

Quite a chill day compared to some of the others but it was nice to do less. Tomorrow we're heading for the coast so we're pretty much done with the leaf peeping part of the trip.

  1. Wow amazing views. Sounds gorgeous. Its literally a day of rain here, and Sunday. But the question remains, where did k get her mystery breakfast cookie?
